A beautiful bloom with an ornate structure and pastel-hued tendrils, the purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is one of about 600 types of the Passiflora genus. Ornamental, edible, and hardy, the climbing vine has also been used by Native Americans for medicinal purposes including alleviating anxiety. The fringed blossom also contains a wide variety of phytochemicals that can make it an effective ingredient in hair care products interesting constituents that we have found effective in some of our hydration products.
What is passionflower extract?
Obtained from purple passionflower, this extract is a light to medium yellow liquid, with a distinctive scent. Rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, it also contains vitamins A and C, as well as various flavonoids and polyphenols.
What are the effects of passionflower extract for hair?
The extract’s flavonoids (such as apigenin and quercetin) can protect hair from damage caused by external environmental factors while also improving hydration. Additionally, there’s hydration from fatty acids – including omega-6, which contains emollient properties that are beneficial for the hairs structure. Passionflower extracts are rich in vitamin C, which helps to make hair softer and shinier. For all these reasons, we incorporate it in specific formulations.
