DOs and DON’Ts
When Using Styling Products

There’s no reason supercharged curls, sleek buns or bouncy blowouts should damage your hair. At Hårklinikken, we’re firm believers in experimenting with different looks and getting all the texture, hold, definition and shine you need using products and techniques that don't compromise the health of your scalp and hair. With the help of our expert Hair Specialists, here are some DOs and DON’Ts when styling your strands for this season’s holiday parties – and beyond.

DO Start Small

When applying styling products, beginning with a small amount is ideal. Using too much at once can leave your hair looking greasy or dull, and potentially feeling sticky or crunchy. Always start with a minimal amount, distribute evenly, and build as necessary – keeping in mind everybody’s hair is unique. (Read our guide to hair types here.)

DON’T Overload on Product

Achieving the perfect hairstyle doesn't have to involve a long list of products; most people can achieve their desired look with just two or three. The less-is-more approach ensures your hair's natural texture isn’t compromised, your strands aren’t weighed down, and your hair remains feeling soft and smooth. (Read our guide to Styling Wax here.)

DO Use Heat Protectant

While we don’t recommend layering too many products on your strands, one essential is heat protectant, if you’re using hot styling tools. The heat from blow-dryers, straighteners and curling wands impacts hair strands, often making them dry, brittle and damaged. It’s important to create a barrier between your hair and that heat by applying Hair Hydrating Crème to clean, damp hair before applying heat – and always a low setting. (Read our guide to hot styling tools here.)

DON’T Use Dry Shampoo

We recommend our products in our styling lineup to create volume rather than using so-called dry shampoo, which isn't shampoo at all. While it can create texture, dry shampoo often contains starch, talc and silica, which can clog hair follicles and disrupt the pH balance of your scalp. This can cause buildup that irritates your scalp; potentially leading to inflammation and hair loss.

DO Review Ingredients

Many styling products (not just dry shampoos) on the market contain numerous potentially problematic ingredients that can negatively impact hair and scalp health – sometimes resulting in scalp inflammation and even hair loss. We recommend avoiding products containing dyes, perfume, parabens, silicones and mineral oils.

DON’T Skip Wash Day

While it can be tempting to maintain a perfect blowout by putting off your wash day, this approach can harm your scalp and hair health. Neglecting your scalp with infrequent or inadequate cleansing routines can lead to an excess of buildup (sebum, dead skin cells, pollutants, and product) and sometimes even hair loss. Prioritising your scalp health by cleansing regularly and correctly with Hårklinikken shampoos will help optimise the health of your hair.
